State of the Soul: August 2026

August is coming to an end, so it’s time for SotS.

My primary project of the month was, as it has been for a year now, Between You, Me, and the Moonlit Sea. I am neck deep in rewriting the final third of the book (draft three) and am currently on ch. 35 of a predicted 47. I’m trying to write 8,000 words a week on BYMMS and then whatever amount I can manage on side projects. So far I’ve been keeping up with it! Buuut it’s also only been two weeks, haha. Still, all progress is good progress you know?

Right now BYMMS is sitting at 132,783 words. This is a chonky book, especially for a romance. I’ve always been of the belief that a story takes as long as it needs to take to tell, though, so I’m letting it run its course. More for you to read, am I right?

After I finish this update, I’ll be back to writing ch. 35, because I still have 2,674 to write for this week for BYMMS, and I still want to get a little work done for other projects.

So what are these other projects?

Well, I’ve teamed up with DarkChibiShadow to create a piece of short fiction titled “The Wolf Who Caught the Phoenix” for Transhet Jam #2. It should be done and released by November. We collaborated on the story and plot, I’m doing the writing, and then DCS is providing the art. Here’s a WIP sketch of the cover!

I’m also still working on the free chapters of Pierce the Sky for Science Fantasy Jam. I had originally had three of the four written and only needed to edit them, but some plot changes were made and now I have to rewrite them, haha. Such is author life. These have to be done and posted by the end of October, so I’ve been trying to give them time when I can, but until Wolf and Phoenix is done, they’re kind of on the back burner. I imagine come September and October’s SotS, you’ll be hearing more about them, though.

On the art front, I… didn’t do much, haha. I lined and flat colored a piece I’d started in July, but still need to shade it. Here’s a progress shot of that:

What did I shade instead of this? Well, my lovely friend Tommo sketched a wonderful piece of the BYMMS trio for me, and I was so excited about it that I colored that instead of finishing my own art.

And finally, personal life updates. The apartment is still getting unpacked, so no office pictures yet. Turns out, when you work full-time and are busy trying to finish a book and try to have a life, the last thing you want to do is unpack stuff unless you really have to. So no real update on that front, there are still a bunch of boxes in my office and none of my art has made it onto the walls. Perhaps in September.

I do have one fun life thing, though: last Wednesday was the release of the second Ghost film, 2 Big to Rig. If you’ve been around my social media for any amount of time, you know I am a massive Ghost fan, so I was very excited about this movie. I got to attend two rituals (concerts) of the Skeletour myself, and I think about them often, so I was very excited to have a film of one of them to relive that experience. My spouse has been getting more into Ghost because of me, so we went together, and we had a great time! I’ve been listening to the album every day since, haha.

And that’s what I’ve got for State of the Soul! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got more writing to do. Until next time. ♥
